introduction to compounding. What is Compounding? Compounding is the art and science of tailor-making medications for unique needs and preferences. It allows a physician to prescribe and a pharmacist to prepare medications into different dosage forms or into preparations no longer commercially available. Our goal at West Lindfield Pharmacy is to work closely with your physician to improve the outcome of your treatment and health. History of Compounding Compounding is not new. In fact, the origin of pharmacy started with the individual preparation of medicines. This practice rapidly declined in the 1950’s when drug manufacturers began to produce standard preparations. The pharmacist’s role was then shifted to that of someone who no longer prepares, but dispenses only standard medications.
Over the last 20 years, physicians have been appreciating again the benefits of customised medications for their patients. Coupled with modern technology, innovative techniques and research, compounding has become more popular. There are now more than 1,500 compounding pharmacists throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe and New Zealand. About 43,000 compounded prescriptions are dispensed daily, with about 3,500 doctors taking advantage of this in the United States and Australia. Here in Australia, West Lindfield Pharmacy is also serving a widespread group of doctors and patients to meet their unique needs.
